Mountain Happiness

“The mountains are calling and I must go.” I’ve seen this quote on everything from T-shirts to underwear (ok, I haven’t, but I’m sure they exist). What you may not know is that it’s a quote from John Muir, who was originally from Scotland but moved to America and was one of the first people to really advocate for the preservation of the U.S. wilderness. All of his essays and books about his adventures in Yosemite and Sequoia helped make them into National Parks, and he’s also the founder the Sierra Club.

It’s my favorite quote (and the only thing I’ve ever considered getting as a tattoo) because I think it hits home with so many of us. The sad part is, I also don’t think we follow through with the “go” part of it enough. We stay home and look at pictures of all these awesome places on Instagram and tell ourselves “someday.” Why not next month? Why not tomorrow? If you don’t have the money, stop buying coffee every morning. If you don’t have the time, ask your boss for mental health day. When you really take a good hard look at your life, I bet you can find a way to do it. So don’t press ignore when the mountains start calling. Go have a conversation.
